THE PROLETKULT CONCEPT OF “MASS-CROWD (PEOPLE)” AND ITS INTERTEXTUAL TRANSCODING BY ANDREI PLATONOV IN THE SHORT NOVEL THE FOUNDATION PIT (Article №2)

DOI: 10.24412/2470-1262-2022-3-25-37

Abstract:

In his key ideological and philosophical work, the short novel The Foundation Pit, Andrei Platonov vividly, persistently and reasonably emphasizes the fact that even among the most ideologically ardent representatives of the revolutionary “avant-garde”, of these “apostles of the revolution”, there is a stratification. Some are trying to take advantageous places as “deputies of the proletariat,” namely the new Soviet party bureaucracy. Others return to their pre-revolutionary state, become diggers and at the same time – objects of history, forced to exist according to a plan descended “from above”. If we take the ordinary human “mass”, then the authorities are destined for it within the rigid framework of the class hierarchy to play the role of a “normalized crowd” that has no right to think and reason. Platonov’s transcoding and division of the concept “Mass-Crowd (People)” into new, separate, but interdependent concepts occurs at different levels of their ideological-symbolic, semantic and compositional implementation.

Keywords: The Foundation Pit as the author’s intertext and the grotesque and critical hypertext, Platonov’s intertextual transcoding of the Proletkult concept “Mass-Crowd”, implicativity and qualitative increment of meanings as a result of such transcoding, the text of The Foundation Pit as a generator of meanings, the author’s concepts “Deputy Proletarians” and “Normalized Mass”, Andrei Platonov’s Dystopia
