DOI: 10.24412/2470-1262-2023-3-54-60

Abstract: The article deals with Sergei Belyakov’s documentary novel about the tragic fates of the heroes who found themselves on the eve of the war events in Stalin’s Moscow. The writer turns to the past, presenting a man in the stream of hostile time, the history of his alienation from the present and the future. The determining parameters of the new documentary novel are fragmentary and kaleidoscopic narrative, disruption of cause-and-effect relationships, non-linear structure, and emotional intensity of the text. The truthfulness of historical facts and authenticity of details are confirmed by archival documents, extracts from minutes of commission meetings, letters, notes, reports, diaries of the novel’s characters. The value of the author’s new documentary prose is determined by the comprehension of the characters, the study of the motives of their actions and deeds.

Keywords: Documentary novel, parameters of documentary prose, diaries, Stalinist Moscow, George Efron, Dmitry Seseman
