Abstract: The paper concentrates on the research of second language attrition, which has progressively
become a part of applied linguistics. The purpose of the research is to elaborate the reactivation
model of lapsed English skills. The analysis of methodological approaches to the processes of
language attrition, highlighting the main factors influencing it, is made. Experimental research to
elicit language loss of adults studying English after a temporary break is conducted.
For data collection, the authors use theoretical analysis of psychological, pedagogical,
linguistic and methodological literature on a topic selected; a questionnaire method (conducting
stating and control experiments using testing). In systematizing and interpreting the results of the
research, a descriptive method is used.
From both a linguistic and psychological point of view, the reactivation of lost English
language skills requires corresponding organization of the educational process so that the training
is active and has a personal or intrapersonal agenda; the student has the opportunity to self-control
and self-esteem using long-term goals, such as restoring previous levels of language skills, and
short-term goals that are specific and measurable.
Theoretical and practical significance consists of the possibility of using the results of theresearch by lecturers of higher education establishments in order to increase the effectiveness of
the educational process. It will also help to improve the teaching methods of English language at
Universities, taking into account the principles of the psycholinguistic approach.
